Trending Bubbles – what to do about gold . . .

Steve Sjuggerund, writing for The Right Side, analyzes the nature of bubbles, the trend in gold prices, and how trailing stops can be used to protect healthy gains.

Audit the Fed – Amendment to a $200 billion bill frightens currency traders!

So what was it that spooked the markets… Well… The only thing I can find was the report yesterday about falling Housing Starts that Chris told you about… Did you know that about 14% of US homeowners were either delinquent on their mortgage or in some stage of foreclosure? That is the highest rate since the group started collecting the data in 1972!

But there was something else that was announced as the day went on, that I think probably spooked the markets more than anything else… And that is a key House panel approved two amendments to a sweeping financial-overhaul bill that would give federal watchdogs new authority to audit the Federal Reserve, and would establish a fund of as much as $200 billion to help dissolve large, troubled institutions. Rep. Ron Paul (R., Texas) offered the amendment seeking to subject the Fed to audits.

Bernanke Rewind – The Fed Head’s same old words

Chuck Butler (The Daily Reckoning):
What a ride yesterday for the currencies! Gold? Well, at one point gold had shot up $24 on the day! It topped out at $1,142… The shiny metal then gave some back on profit taking, but gold holders have got to love it! Those who keep waiting for a pullback. Well, they might still be waiting when the cows come home.

Yesterday, we had a couple of Fed Heads talking, but the Big Kahuna stood out and moved the markets with his statements… Here’s the skinny…

Big Ben was giving a speech, and said, “The Fed will monitor closely the currencies, and the Fed’s policies will ensure that the dollar is strong.” Now, when he first uttered those…

Time to dump gold?

Gold gained yet another powerful ally yesterday — hedge fund icon Paul Tudor Jones. The man who famously called Black Monday in 1987 and the Nikkei crash a few years later now thinks “gold appears to be cheap.” In a note to his investors, Tudor said, “I have never been a gold bug. It is just an asset that, like everything else in life, has its time and place. And now is that time… gold’s value should increase as its scarcity relative to printed currencies increases.”

So gold is now publicly loved by armchair investors, famous hedge fund managers and central banks… even as we write, Erin Burnett is “squawking” about it on CNBC. Are your contrarian senses tingling yet?

“So many…

Jobs Disappoint…

September job losses soar to 263,000…G-7 does not make statement on currencies…RBA meets tonight…India & Brazil pull the right strings…And Now… Today’s Pfennig!Good day… And a Marvelous Monday to you! The Regular Season for Baseball is over, except… The Tigers and Twins have to play a one-game playoff today! Talk about exciting! And that’s just to see who gets to go the playoffs!

Well… Friday’s Jobs Jamboree did disappoint as I had the feeling they would, printing a disappointing -263,000 jobs lost in September. The Unemployment Rate also rose to 9.8%… Now we all know that when all the people that are truly unemployed are counted, that the Unemployment Rate goes to 16%, but the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) will…

G-7 to Discuss Currencies?

The ball is in the dollar’s court today…Aussie is unable to hold 14-month high…China and Eurozone print stronger PMI’s. Chock-full-o-data today…And Now… Today’s Pfennig!

Good day… Welcome to October! And a Tub Thumpin’ Thursday to you! No real reason to get Tub Thumpin’, but I thought why not? The non-dollar currencies have given back their gains made yesterday to the dollar, in a game of what seems to be, give and take… A tennis match with the dollar, one day the ball is in the dollar’s court, and the next day it’s not! Really, kind of giving me a rash, watching this… I want some direction here!

So… When I turned on all my screens this morning, and then waited about 20…

FOMC Week…

The dollar pushes back! FOMC plays battleship? Norges Bank meets this week…Precious metals give back too…And Now… Today’s Pfennig!

Good day… And a Marvelous Monday to you! Here we go… Starting a new week all over again… I have a blank page to start each day, and then 2 hours later… The Fabulous Pfennig! A work of art, I must say! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Well… Recall on Friday, I said that the non-dollar currencies would probably just follow whatever the stocks did, since the data cupboard was empty? Well, the non-dollar currencies didn’t even follow that theme, as stocks pretty much wallowed around in the mud all day… The dollar began to push back at the gains the other currencies had made during the…

Global Investor: Gold King of the Currency Hill in the 21st Century

The Swiss franc is still a good currency relative to the majority of paper trash still circulating in the world, but it isn’t quite the beacon of strength it once was…

Gold Slowly Gaining Ground on the Franc

Though it did play that role in the worst of the financial crisis starting in late 2007, the Swiss currency has failed to maintain its relative purchasing power vis-à-vis gold since 2001 (see gold in Swiss franc terms above).

Since late 2001 when the dollar peaked, the Swiss franc has gained a cumulative 36%. This compares to gold rising a cumulative 130% in Swiss franc terms or from 4.5 to 10.35 now. The Swiss franc has lagged behind gold this decade. That’s not a surprise.…

Protectionism Wars, Here We Come!

Currencies back off gains…Administration slaps tariff on China…And Yen rallies…Quotes from Davos…And Now… Today’s Pfennig!

Good day… And a Marvelous Monday to you! I hope your weekend was grand… I was supposed to be traveling back from Williamsburg today, so this is a bonus day for you all! HA! On Friday morning, I told the early arrivers that the currencies were strong, Gold was strong, it was all good, and we needed to close up shop and go home, because it wasn’t going to get an better than that, and that the rest of the day had nothing but disappointment risk! Boy did I nail that one on the head! Let’s get to the goings on.

The currencies added to their gains…

Patriot Day

Currencies have strong rally!  Trade Deficit jumps 16.3% in July!  HR 1207 Gets a hearing!  Gold gets back to $1,000!
And Now… Today’s Pfennig!

Good day… And a Happy Friday to one and all! Today is Patriot Day in the U.S. and a day that brings back memories of cowardly attacks on our country 8 years ago. I remember the shock and horror on everyone’s faces, and that image will remain with me to the grave. I also remember trying to write the Pfennig the “day after”… It just didn’t seem that important of a thing to do, but a reader told me that to keep things as “normal” as possible was the best thing I could do… So… I wrote…

OK… The currencies, and this…

Cautiously Positive?

Euro & yen add to gains…RBNZ disappoints…Foreclosures continue to stack up! BOE & BOC meet today…And Now… Today’s Pfennig!

Good day… And a Thrillin’ Thursday to you! Ahhh! A change! Just thought that with the thrilling victories my beloved Cardinals have been accumulating, that Thrillin’ would be a nice change to our Thursday lineup!

Front and Center this morning… The currencies added to their gains this week yesterday, albeit small gains, but gains nonetheless. The Fed’s Beige Book was “cautiously positive”… And… Overnight, the Reserve Bank of New Zealand met, and left rates unchanged as suspected… This and more as we begin our Thrillin’ Thursday!

The Big Dog euro has been off the porch chasing the dollar down the street for a week…

Good day… And a Tub Thumpin’ Thursday to you! Let’s hope it remains a Tub Thumpin’ Thursday later today, as I head downtown to watch my beloved Cardinals play a day game! For those of you who are baseball fans, you know what I mean when I carry on about how baseball should only be played during the day!

OK… Before I get to the currencies, economies and the dolts in the world, I wanted to briefly talk about the SEC, who made an announcement yesterday that they had done an investigation of the Madoff audits, and did not find any…
